HISTORY:
The Hellsing’s Vampire has a storied history indeed. Born in 1431 as the Wallachia Prince Vlad Dracul and ending his mortal life under the label “Vlad the Impaler”, he then began a reign of terror over Transylvania, which spread across the seas to England. Finally suffering defeat in London at the hands of Abraham Van Helsing, the vampire hunter then used some form of magic – whether it was black magic or some other form of sorcery is unknown – to bind the vampire now dubbed “Alucard” into servitude to Van Helsing’s descendants and aid him in carrying out his mission: to exterminate and destroy all monsters menacing the human world. Whether or not Alucard willingly entered Van Helsing’s service as a respite from death is also unknown.

Over the years, Van Helsing’s descendants eventually became known only as “Hellsing”, with a single heir master over the vampire bound to that bloodline. They also became instrumental in keeping the monster and vampire populace in check. The Hellsing Organization – known formally as the “Royal Order of Protestant Knights” – soon became a large part of Briton’s aristocracy, but only the Queen and the Round Table (a group of high-ranking government officials) are privy to Hellsing’s true mission. Along with their mission of “eradicating vampire filth,” Hellsing also “perfected” their ultimate weapon, the vampire bound to the family by magic and blood, giving him powers far and above that of any “normal” – if such can be said – vampire. As Alucard is also what would might be considered a “pure” or “Type A” vampire, Hellsing’s modifications might have only been minimal, but such has not yet been revealed.

In 1944, Alucard was sent to Poland with then 14 year old Walter Dornez, a young Hellsing operative, to destroy the beginnings of an abomination: the German group Millennium had begun research into making “artificial” vampires via a chip implanted in their bodies. Millennium was founded before the end of WWII and was known for researching the supernatural in attempts to create the “perfect army” of supersoldiers. Walter and Alucard supposedly destroyed their base of operations and killed all members, but apparently a few members requisite to the operation survived, for Millennium made another appearance some fifty years later.

After returning from Germany, Arthur Hellsing, the current Hellsing Master, was ordered to seal Alucard away under the orders that he was deemed “too powerful” or “too dangerous” for mere mortals to attempt to fully keep him under control. This is the speculated reason; the true reason for Alucard’s imprisonment has not been revealed. Nevertheless, he lay dormant in Hellsing’s basement until twenty years later, when 13 year old Integra Hellsing sought escape from her uncle, Richard, in his attempt to murder her and take over the Organization, his brother having died perhaps an hour before.

Integra fled to the basement, recalling her father’s instructions should she need protection, and entered the locked cell in which the vampire’s by-now desiccated corpse had been imprisoned. Richard nevertheless discovered her hiding place and Integra was grazed by a bullet from her uncle’s gun. The blood splattered over the vampire’s husk but before Richard could carry out his task of murdering his niece, Integra’s blood rejuvenated the vampire and he awoke from his slumber and effectively slaughtered Richard’s henchmen, and in turn bent knee to the next heir of Hellsing, even stopping yet another of Richard’s bullets from ending her life.

In the years since, Alucard has served Integra willingly; she uses him as much as her ancestors did – sending him to rid the world of the filth that infests it, using his great power and bloodlust to cleanse England in the name of Queen, Country and Duty. He has sired one vampire “child” since his reemergence into the modern world, a young policewoman by the name of Seras Victoria. She had been captured and wounded by a vampire posing as a priest, and Alucard gave her the choice of death or following him into darkness. She chose the latter and he brought her into the vampire’s shadowy world, and she has since been accepted into the Hellsing Organization as one of its operatives. Although Alucard is still her master, he constantly encourages her to drink blood of her own free will and become a vampire in her own right, free of all constraints but she is still hesitant and has trouble dealing with her new “un”life.

Recently, the past has come back to haunt the Hellsing Organization – Millennium has nearly wiped out all of Hellsing’s forces and is on the brink of preparing for the ultimate war, and the Iscariot Organization continues to pose a threat to Hellsing’s mission, largely due to Paladin Alexander Anderson and his passionate hatred for Alucard, both of them the whips their masters wield in effort to keep the world safe from the monsters of the night.

To expand, Alucard encountered Paladin Anderson in Badrick, Ireland, he and Seras having been sent north to deal with a vampire menace there. The Vatican, well aware that Hellsing planned to send its vampire, in turn sent their own trump creation. Anderson’s hatred for all vampires is vast, regardless of their “distinction”, and he and Alucard dueled until both were commanded to stand down by Integra herself. Since then, both Alucard and Anderson have sworn to exterminate the other and they never pass up an opportunity to bait, goad and coerce each other into battle.

Shortly thereafter, the Hellsing Organization Headquarters was attacked by the Valentine brothers, Jan and Luke, during a Round Table conference, successfully trapping Integra and the other members inside. Almost all of the Hellsing soldiers were slaughtered during this carefully orchestrated attack, which was later discovered to be part of Millenium’s strategy in concurrence with their upcoming war. The Brothers overran the Hellsing mansion with ghoul soldiers, Jan leading them from floor to floor in attempt to reach the third where the Round Table had convened. Thanks to intervention by Walter, Hellsing family retainer and former Hellsing operative – retired – and Seras Victoria, only Jan managed to reach the protected room. Integra then dealt with him accordingly and discovered the true presence behind the attack.

Alucard did not deign to take part in the slaughter, stating that he was “waiting for my true enemy”, which, in this case, was Luke Valentine, the more powerful and intelligent of the two brothers. He came upon Alucard in the vampire’s basement, boasting of his abilities and crowing how he’d be the vampire to defeat the mighty Alucard of Hellsing. The two exchanged gunfire, and Alucard was shot at least twice in the head. Luke figured his victory complete, but Alucard merely laughed and rose from his chair, ecstatic now that he’d found a “real challenge” and proceeded to unleash his powers, ending by shooting off Luke Valentine’s legs. It was revealed – much to Alucard’s disappointment – that Luke was not a “true” vampire and was only a product of human engineering. Since Luke was merely a “dog”, Alucard allowed his hellhound form to destroy the manufactured vampire.

In effort to increase Hellsing’s membership, Walter then hires the mercenary group Wild Geese, led by Pip Bernadette. Alucard is less than impressed with the group, but he, Seras and Pip are then sent to Rio de Janiero in Brazil to snoop out any clues about Millennium and its whereabouts. Hellsing received important information tying Millennium to this part of the country in a bizarre encounter with the Iscariot Organization, Integra meeting its leader Enrico Maxwell at an art museum – neutral ground and in daylight, as to avoid possible incidents. However, Maxwell’s indignant insult of Integra has Alucard emerging into the museum with the mind to take Maxwell’s life for his rudeness, since the vampire tolerates no disrespect of his master. Maxwell retaliates and summons Anderson, which leads to a tense almost-altercation between the two violent enemies. But Seras Victoria manages to herd a group of tourists between the dueling two and heads off the sparks, leaving both Alucard and Anderson to wait for their next encounter.

Now in Brazil, the two Hellsing vampires are labeled international terrorists by officials who have been promised immortality by Millennium agents. Acting upon orders from his Master, Alucard eradicates the local police forces in bloody battle and then engages in a climactic skirimish with one of Millennium’s creations, Alhambra. Alhambra is defeated and then absorbed into Alucard’s “pool of souls”, and the three return to London.

They are immediately escorted into the Queen’s presence, where a conference has been assembled with Integra, the Round Table Knights and Maxwell from Iscariot. Alucard is summoned before the queen and he kneels before her, intimating that both perhaps knew each other long before the vampire entered his current master’s service. However, the conference is interrupted by Schrodinger, an agent of Millennium, bringing news from the Major via live-video transmission. The Major greets them all with sadistic glee, particularly Alucard and Walter, since they were agents of Millennium’s supposed destructions half a century ago. The Major reveals that Millennium is not dead, and has been operating in secret since the last world war, and is now ready to return to the battlefield with a new army bent on nothing but destruction. When questioned, the Major gleefully answers that his only purpose is war, nothing else. Alucard, vastly amused by this, laughs and invites the Nazi’s, no doubt spoiling for a battle as well. He shoots Schrodinger but the body disappears, returning to the Major’s dirigible thanks to Schrodinger’s contrived powers.

Integra then decides to send Alucard to the aircraft carrier Eagle, as it has been hijacked by Rip Van Winkle and her force of Millennium soldiers. He is conveyed to the ship via Stealth-style high aircraft and arrives at the ship via a barrage of missiles. Rip senses his arrival and goes into a fit of panic, sending her soldiers into attack mode, only to be exterminated by Alucard as he appears on the heilo-deck. Left to her own devices, Rip manages to shoot him with one of her “magic bullets”, which “punishes all without distinction” in attempt to drive him over the side of the carrier’s deck. Alucard catches her bullet in his teeth, sealing Rip’s inevitable fate. He pins her to the bulkhead and uses her own musket to stake her through the heart before drinking what’s left of her blood and engulfing her in his shadow, killing her and adding her to the souls trapped inside his darkness.

During this event, Millennium has declared war on England – and indeed, all the world – and its forces have mobilized and are moving inexorably towards London. Alucard is still trapped on the Eagle, but his master, the remainder of the Hellsing Organization and the entire city of London are in grave danger, but Alucard cannot cross water unaided, thus he is forced to commandeer the aircraft carrier and use his considerable power to propel it across the sea towards Briton.

PERSONALITY:
“Gleefully insane” comes very close to describing the vampire Alucard. He is a vampire and more, it seems; he is weapon of ultimate destruction and revels in the carnage caused by his eradication of targets named by his master. It has been speculated that Abraham Van Helsing drove his subject mad by the magics used to bind him to that family, and it could certainly be true.

However, Alucard nevertheless is fanatically loyal to the Hellsing family, particularly to Integra herself; it has been noted by the queen and even Walter that her father Arthur was never able to command the vampire’s respect and servitude as well as Integra has. Perhaps it is because they share the same goals – Integra and Alucard both hold a vast contempt for the undead vampires that infest the world, Integra because they are freaks of nature and Alucard because they have degenerated into pitiful replicas of what he once considered to be a powerful and dignified race, like himself. Whatever the reason, Alucard takes sadistic and masochistic pleasure from the fact that his master commands him to kill with such an inflamed passion, much like Alucard had done himself when he held the mortal mantle and killed in the name of his own country and empire. She is his “Countess” and he is doggedly devoted to her every whim and order. He even makes a game out of taunting her every so often, offering her the rewards and delights of vampire blood in order to further her own ambitions and to “keep Hellsing safe”.

Alucard is dangerously intelligent, arrogant, brash and holds little regard for most humans as a whole, as he has seen them as little more than food for the last several centuries. He has a decidedly one-track mind, but his attention can be diverted from its target, usually by his master, but when given a direct order from Integra, nothing will stop Alucard from completing it. He glories in the heat of battle, the rush of combat and takes every opportunity to do just that, often referring to his fights as “games” and always urges his combatants to fight harder, fight more and make the altercation last as long as possible, for him to revel in the slaughter.

Yet, for all his love of bloody chaos and battles, Alucard does, in fact, hold some admiration for a few humans he’s encountered over the years. Walter, for example, holds the vampire’s respect even now, in his later years, and the Queen herself looked fondly on the vampire at the war conference. Alucard even remarked to her that she was more beautiful to him now than she had been in the prime of her youth. Even Paladin Anderson, the vampire’s bitter enemy, garners a bit of respect from the vampire, as Alucard sees him as his own exact opposite, but some reason pities him a bit as well, probably because Anderson too is a servant of humans and has been mutilated for their own purposes, even as Alucard himself.

Alucard also has memories of his time before Hellsing, he can remember his life before being bound to the Hellsing family. While these memories may not be clear and distinct, he does remember who he was before being bound. These “dreams” seem to have a sobering effect on the vampire’s internal chaos, and do in fact come into play later in the canon storyline, when he becomes “Count” as well as Alucard himself.

SPECIAL ABILITIES:
Alucard cannot be killed by conventional means. Staking through the heart, decapitation, or getting ripped apart by heavy artillery fire has little effect on the vampire. His regeneration abilities are beyond impressive; they are seemingly divine. And like all vampires, he does not age. Sunlight is not lethal, but he abhors it nevertheless, preferring to remain underground during the daylight hours.

He uses two massive handguns, the silver .454 Casull and the black 13mm Jackal and expresses deadly accuracy in wielding each. Mainly used for exterminating large masses of undead or ghouls, the guns were specially made for him by the Hellsing Arms Department, but Alucard is not above tearing fiends apart with his bare hands, as his physical strength is well above that of any human or monster.

Alucard expresses great celerity and agility as well, fast enough to dodge bullets and most other attacks by enemies. He has “phase” powers, or the ability to move through solid objects such as walls or doors. He seems to move through space, even walking up walls and hanging from the ceiling. He also has great shapeshifting abilities, holding forms of hellhounds, bats, insects, and masses of darkness.

He has great telepathic abilities, able to communicate mind-to-mind with his master and Seras, and can hypnotize other “lesser willed” humans for whatever end. He is able to absorb memories and feelings through the feeding or simply taking blood from an individual.

Physical Description:
Alucard chooses a tall, lanky form in which to manifest. Normally clothed in Victorian style red coat, black uniform and pants and red cravat, he can regenerate any damaged clothing as they are also part of himself. His skin is very pale, eyes are a red-orange shade, indicating he’s far from a normal human and the wide mouth full of sharp teeth is a trademark of Hellsing’s pet. Often using the wide brimmed hat as an affectation, Alucard towers above most humans, seemingly delighting in making most uncomfortable with his presence.

Depending on his mood, he can also take the form of shadows, appearing as nothing more than a cloud of blackness, from which his eyes and teeth gleam rather mockingly. Also incorporating a hellhound form, Alucard can shift into the large dog and slink about if he so wishes; the mutt is the size of a Shetland Pony, with six red eyes and sharp teeth as well. He affectionately refers to it as “Baskervilles”.
