Fandom: Hellsing
Name: Alucard
Canon Point: Just after the death of Rip Van Winkle, while Alucard is aboard the Eagle II warship.
History: Alucard @ the Hellsing Wiki
[Optional] Character Development and Relationship Transfer from previous RP: I felt the need to leave this option in the application, because Alucard has a tendency to fluctuate from Hellsing's pet monster to the Count of Wallachia, and all his "personifications" in between, which is not strictly canon, but more or less alluded to in the Hellsing storyline past the canon point from which I'm using. Given that all of them are Alucard himself, it might appear to some that he's not straight-arrow canon, but since the character has so much history in other works, feasibility could be swayed for head-canon or character quirks.
Personality: “Gleefully insane” comes very close to describing the vampire Alucard. He is a vampire and more, it seems; he is weapon of ultimate destruction and revels in the carnage caused by his eradication of targets named by his master. It has been speculated that Abraham Van Helsing drove his subject mad by the magics used to bind him to that family, and it could certainly be true.
However, Alucard nevertheless is fanatically loyal to the Hellsing family, particularly to Integra herself; it has been noted by the queen and even Walter that her father Arthur was never able to command the vampire’s respect and servitude as well as Integra has. Perhaps it is because they share the same goals – Integra and Alucard both hold a vast contempt for the undead vampires that infest the world, Integra because they are freaks of nature and Alucard because they have degenerated into pitiful replicas of what he once considered to be a powerful and dignified race, like himself. Whatever the reason, Alucard takes sadistic and masochistic pleasure from the fact that his master commands him to kill with such an inflamed passion, much like Alucard had done himself when he held the mortal mantle and killed in the name of his own country and empire. She is his “Countess” and he is doggedly devoted to her every whim and order. He even makes a game out of taunting her every so often, offering her the rewards and delights of vampire blood in order to further her own ambitions and to “keep Hellsing safe”.
Alucard is dangerously intelligent, arrogant, brash and holds little regard for most humans as a whole, as he has seen them as little more than food for the last several centuries. He has a decidedly one-track mind, but his attention can be diverted from its target, usually by his master, but when given a direct order from Integra, nothing will stop Alucard from completing it. He glories in the heat of battle, the rush of combat and takes every opportunity to do just that, often referring to his fights as “games” and always urges his combatants to fight harder, fight more and make the altercation last as long as possible, for him to revel in the slaughter. Any lesser monster, or "freak" or "Midian", he also holds in scathing contempt, for to him, they are unworthy of even existing and deserve nothing less than eradication.
Yet, for all his love of bloody chaos and battles, Alucard does, in fact, hold some admiration for a few humans he’s encountered over the years. Walter, for example, holds the vampire’s respect even now, in his later years, and the Queen herself looked fondly on the vampire at the war conference. Alucard even remarked to her that she was more beautiful to him now than she had been in the prime of her youth. Even Paladin Anderson, the vampire’s bitter enemy, garners a modicum of respect, as Alucard sees him as his own exact opposite, but some reason pities him a bit as well, probably because Anderson too is a servant of humans and has been mutilated for their own purposes, even as Alucard himself.
Alucard also has memories of his time before Hellsing, he can remember his life before being bound to the Hellsing family. While these memories may not always be clear and distinct, he does remember who he was before being bound. These “dreams” seem to have a sobering effect on the vampire’s internal chaos, and do in fact come into play later in the canon storyline, when he becomes “Count” as well as Alucard himself.
"Immortality is a myth." Alucard mentions this several times throughout his adventures in Hellsing, apparently stating that there is no such thing as a true immortal. This would constitute that he believes he himself able to be killed or destroyed, which is further evidenced by his conversations/altercations with Paladin Alexander Anderson. "Only Man can destroy a Monster!" He tells the Paladin this several times, usually in the middle of one of their titanic brawls. It is unclear whether or not this is actually fact, due to Anderson becoming a monster himself later on in the series and being unable to completely destroy Alucard during their last battle. Even though Anderson was defeated, Alucard still took no joy in the Catholic's demise, as he perhaps saw Anderson as the one Man capable of releasing him from his own slavery. And even with Alucard's apparent "defeat" during the battle of London, he still returns to his Master some thirty years later, still the same as he was before the war.
However, although he doesn't believe in true immortality, he has, nevertheless, offered his semblance of it to those humans he respects and admires. Alucard believes that such humans, like Integra and even Seras (who stood strong in the face of evil and death), are worthy of holding such a power, and would be powerful themselves should they ever accept his vampiric gift. For all of his power, Alucard still envies humanity, mostly for its ability to adapt and change, to grow old and die. It's evidenced several times that he wishes he could do the same, having existed exactly as he was the moment he became a vampire for centuries. He admires humans such as Walter and the Queen, as they "are more beautiful" in their later years than they were in the bloom of youth, but pities the butler during the battles in London, because Walter "took" vampiric immortality, becoming young again; he didn't earn it. Alucard admired Abraham Van Helsing despite his capture, for Abraham possessed the strength to bring down such a monster. He admires his Master more than any other being, for Integra epitomizes everything he once admired about himself. He even rails at Alexander Anderson during their last battle, cautioning him to remain human and not use the Nail to become a monster like himself.
Alucard seems to long for death, true death. He deeply regrets his decision to become a monster, to turn his back on the God he served true and faithfully, even unto death. As children, he and his brother Radu were given to the Ottoman Turks by their father, as payment to keep the Empire out of Wallachia. After the death of Vlad II, the Ottomans put Vlad III on the throne, but the warring Hungarians laid waste to Wallachia and he was forced to leave his lands yet again. He returned three years later, however, and found Wallachia in chaos; rampant crime, no trade or farms, people living in worse than squalor. Vlad then began his quest to restore his lands to their former glory, utilizing whatever methods, however extreme or violent, to restore order. He believed that God had abandoned his people, and that he was bound to "do great things", such as convert by the sword, slaughter evildoers without question, to earn back God's favor.
His accomplishments swung too far, however, and it wasn't long before his own people began to fear him, and when he came to the end of his own "Holy War" with the Turks, there were few left to stand beside him. It was then, after his capture and torture by the Ottomans, that he realized he'd failed, and God had once more abandoned him and his people and lands. Thus, in his black despair, he renounced his faith, his relationship with his God, and in defiance, called upon the dark magics of the mountains and drank the blood of his slain countrymen, forever turning his back on life and light. If he could not earn God's favor as a mortal man, then he would take life away from God as a monster of the devil. This is not to say he doesn't believe in God--Alucard absolutely believes in God. But he cannot forgive Him for His silence all those years ago, of the blindness turned to his suffering and service. He sees God as uncaring, emotionless and faithless, despite his own arrogance, which was what originally brought him to darkness.
Alucard does quote scripture--he knows the Bible quite well--but the words are always tinged with mockery and twisted to be ironic from their original meaning. He sneers at faith, needling both Anderson and Enrico Maxwell when they try to use their Catholic shield to deter the vampire during their altercations. He believes in God, but also believes that humans are wasting their time putting their faith in such a silent deity, and would be better served in having faith in themselves, as in the end, that is all one can truly count on.
Skills | Powers: Because there are seven bazillion...
Limitations:
◈ Alucard must have blood in order to function. He won't die from its lack, but he will become lethargic, listless and even more bad-tempered. He can rest in his coffin to counteract this state, but it serves for only so long as a pallative.
◈ Sunlight isn't lethal, but Alucard nevertheless hates it, therefore will not venture out into the daylight willingly, preferring to remain down in whatever abode he has to stay out of the abhorred light.
◈ His coffin can also serve as a form of imprisonment, should it be necessary. In canon, only his Master can confine him to his coffin by making it an Order, but as a limiting factor is necessary in the absence of a Hellsing master, if the gods of Tartarus deem it necessary to mete out a punishment, this is the best choice.
First Person Sample:
[Silence, broken by a random static crackle. Followed by a low, dark voice.]
Master.
[A rippled growl stirred through the audio feed.]
This is not Midian.
[Silence.]
Search and Destroy...I do not feel you, my Master. The Seals...are silent.
[A low, rhythmic pulse echoed in the device, ending with an abrupt feedback squeal.]
This...is not...Midian!!
[A chilling howl emerged, belling with the voice of a thousand lost souls before the thundering voice overrode it.]
Integra--Fairbrook--Wingates--HELLSING!! Heed your Monster's call!
[As abruptly as it began, the transmission suddenly ceased, leaving only unseen resonations behind.]
Third Person Sample:
Dreams. They were so vivid now. He drifted back through Time’s Eye, seeing from afar the memories of his life. The fire, the pain, the blood. The misery…
Alucard opened his eyes, flaming scarlet in the suffocating darkness. But the shadows were ‘ere his friend and he ruled this space for eternity. The coffin had been built to accommodate his body, and it did so with velvet precision. Silken was the lining against grave-cold skin, of finest ebony was the surrounding empire. The lid swung back on soundless hinges and the vampire rose, a graceful shadow to the coming night.
God, but he was starving! A sneer rippled his lips as he spied the carafe of ice on his well-worn table, the chilled plasma packet carefully nestled among the cubes. A closer inspection revealed a twin huddled behind the first, prompting a peculiar quirk of the vampire’s mirth.
“Cheeky, Walter,” he said aloud, sibilant baritone slithering through his stony domain. “Very cheeky, O Angel.”
Nevertheless, nourishment was needed – although he’d have preferred it spurting from a willing open vein – thus Alucard retrieved both packets and, one in his teeth, stowed the other away for later before emerging whisper quiet from his basement, deigning to take a small jaunt about before checking upon his master. A brief visit to the lounge left startled oaths and curses in his wake, tickling no end of amusement to the vampire, for the “Wild Geese” weren’t yet inured to the quirks of Hellsing’s weapon.
Seras he sensed was still below, moody and miserable. The chit was starving, but Alucard just shook his head and moved on. He couldn’t make the girl drink, that was a step she had to take all on her own. A sharp fang idly pierced the plastic as he chewed on the empty plasma packet. Despite Seras’ hesitation, Alucard had to admire the girl’s resolve, even if he did think her brainless for acting such a ninny.
Still, the night was young and he had things to do. Ghosting through the hallways, he finally faded into his master’s expansive office, a sharp black brow quirking to see her sitting not at her desk but gazing out of the story-high windows. Silently he approached her, standing just behind her left shoulder and inclined his head.
“I am here, master.” His purred voice echoed through the room’s high archways and rolled across the expensive marbled floors. “Have you orders for me?”
